Good point, Phyllis. When I was growing up, camping was a decidedly "on the ground, under the stars, freezing one's butt off" sort of affair. I was definitely introduced early on to the character-building experience of roughing it, which is quite different from the comfortable experience of watching the world whiz by in an Airstream!

Phyllis, I agree. I grew up pitching a tent and the experience is very different. The bonus is that we have "camped" in beautiful country and urban areas as well with our Airstream. They're very versatile.

Airstreams are totally cool! Although I’m not so sure I’d call this camping....I think this type of mobile vacationing has more in common with cruise ships. I think it's really about having a mobile living space with a certain level of comfort as opposed to sleeping in tent and carrying a backpack (not a diss on either, just an observation.)

No need to redecorate a new Airstream! Our 2007 25' Safari is the coolest house we own. The interior is beautifully modern minimalist. It has the best lines of the original Airstreams along with the brilliant use of space inside, but it is very clean and modern which makes it perfect for a small space. We love it for travel, but we also use it for a guest house when we have visitors. It is truly one of the best purchases we have ever made.

We go camping. Me, the fashionista, calls it a day and puts on my jeans and hiking boots and we camp. With four kids. It is lovely and peaceful and the bathrooms where we stay are scrupulously clean (it used to be a military base, after all.) It is also not far from both the outlet mall and the wine trail, so it is a good experience for all.

We have thought about getting a camper. My biggest concern is maneuvering the behemoth through the streets. I don't know how it is done. I did drive a school bus once (once!) as part of some morale building thing for a job, and that was scary enough.

My dream is to get an Airstream (one of the silver pillbug looking ones) and have it completely redone in luxury.
