Jo Meester: A sampler
By Never teh BrideWho’s Jo Meester? He’s a designer from the Netherlands and co-founder of the Meesters & Van der Park Design Studio. I enjoy his work because of its amazing diversity — instead of sticking to one discipline, he moves from one to another with great skill. He explores woodworking before moving on to crochet before taking up a needle to create art from cast off pieces of wool. Not everything is particularly functional, but all of it is fun.
These err on the side of functionality, though the name — Ornamental Inheritance Vessels — speaks to me of urns and ashes. I think I’d set them up somewhere instead of, say, filling them with filberts.
What looks like a string of garlic is really a multi-level vase based on the idea of using bulbs as vessels. I have far too many vases already, but I’m sure I could find a place for this. In fact, who needs other vases when you have multiple mini-vases?
Modern water jet cutting technology and traditional woodwork come together in this oddly beautiful table. Just be sure that you display it on its own, lest your priceless knickknacks fall through the cracks.
More bulbs, but bigger this time. The idea is played out in a more subtle fashion in these vessels, which are manufactured using rapid prototyping technology.

I don’t usually care for furniture that’s not useful, and that table is plainly not even a little bit useful — but I love it nonetheless; it’s gorgeous. If I had a house, I’d be seriously coveting that critter.
(It would also be fun to see a cat trying to figure out how to sleep on it.)

That table would definitely need a glass top. The pieces hanging off the edges would be too fragile to survive any pressure at all…I love those bulb vases…

Crazy and beautiful? That’s got me written all over it. Love all of these!

His take on traditional Dutch icons is pretty cool (blue & white porcelin, bulbs)
