The choice is clear?
Clear and colored plastics don’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon if all these house and home rags I read every month are any indication. There are the various Ghost chairs designed by Phillippe Starck, and then there’s the polyhedron Alchemia chairs I mentioned a while back.
Here’s another, again designed by Starck:
The Mademoiselle armchair claims to combine two (or is it four?) aesthetic qualities: “solidity and space, materiality and transparency.” I like the fact that it comes in oodles of different colors and prints.
This is Starck’s chair in what is presumably its natural habitat:
I don’t particularly like the way it looks like it’s hovering in space, a la Dominar Rygel XVI’s floaty chair. Maybe it’s something about the wall the chair is up against, but the legs just seem to disappear. I suppose that’s the “space,” but I’m not feeling the “solidity.”
I don’t know about you, NtB, but I find the way the pattern of the chair almost – but not quite – matches that vase slightly unnerving. And then to have the invisible legs…no, I don’t think this chair makes me aesthetically comfortable. It is, however, an interesting idea.
I find the clear legs unnerving, too. It is one thing to have a chair that is all clear, and another to have one with only the legs transparent, for some reason.
Also, yay for science fiction geeks.

On the other hand, I find that the shape of the chair doesn’t fit the rest of the room, but the legs don’t bother me.
I don’t like the Mademoiselle chair on principle — the lines are too square for me. But what I DO think would be cool and look good is if you could put some kind of changeable fabric insert into the back and/or seat of the Starck Victoria/Louis ghost chairs. I’m thinking about buying the one without the arms (I forget whether that’s the Victoria or the Louis – I think it’s the Louis) and seeing whether I can rig something. I think that the ovals color would be interesting around a dining room table.
