We are close-ish to the ocean, Emily, but I'm prepared for that. My mom used to paint houses professionally and was giving me all the choice advice. We've been peeking at the wood shingles in various places around the house, and they seem to be in good condition. We're not going to attempt a pull job unless we can be reasonably sure that what's underneath will need a little painting and sanding and possible a few shingle replacements. I'm not Bob Vila over here!

There was wood under our crumbling asphalt siding. Unfortunately, it was in a really bad state due to said siding being installed in addition to insulation being forced down the exterior walls. So, vinyl siding it was.

The other thing to keep in mind is your proximity to the ocean; if you're close, that salt air can really do a number on paint jobs.
