A bit pricey for parties, no?
By Never teh BrideAh, summertime, when a young gal’s thoughts turn to margarita parties. Or is that just me? As soon as the weather gets warm — or, as is the case in my neck of the woods, horribly and unbearably hot — visions of backyard parties start dancing in my head. Sure, I could just line any old container with a trash bag and fill it up with ice to keep the beers cold, but where’s the fun in that?
I thought that my parties were poised to be colorized when I happened upon the MacBeth Collection, a set of fun storage solutions designed by Margaret Josephs.

Then I decided to check out the prices, thinking that a tub couldn’t possibly be that expensive. Boy was I wrong! Seventy-five bucks for a container slightly less than two feet wide? Seventy bucks for a pitcher?! I don’t care how stylish they are — I’d rather earmark that money for some nice tequila.
The site’s About Us page reads:
The MacBeth Collection has spread its custom-designed creations to almost every home product and accessory including: storage bins, baby pails, picture frames, flower vases, umbrella holders, clip boards, etc. – all with the mission of transforming the mundane into a stylish expression of personal style.
For now, I think I’ll express my personal style by getting a few metal tubs from the Home Depot and decorating them myself.

I think these could actually be duplicated pretty easily for a fraction of the cost. They’re really cute, but I can’t help thinking that you could pick up buckets, pitchers, and tubs for a song, cover them with contact paper or wallpaper in pretty patterns, and give them a couple coats of clear varnish to protect the new finish. Deal done. As long as you’re not using them to directly serve foodstuffs (icing bottles and cans would be just fine, filling that ice tub directly with lemonade, not so much…but that would be true even without the decoration), you’d be fine. I’d use the pitchers to hold flowers or other decorative items rather than drinks, but if I’m going to err, I’d rather it be on the side of caution with something like that.

I found a white metal tub lined with orange from either Target or Marshalls/Homegoods about 4 years ago for something like $15. I’m sure they’re still selling something like it. What I like the most about it is that the inside is also coated in the white, so I don’t get rust stains when I use it as an ice bucket. It’s also foodsafe, but I don’t like the idea of something with that wide of a mouth and no cover holding food or drink or ice. When I’m not using it for booze, I put rolled up towels in it for the bathroom.
