Shopping In My Head
By Never teh BrideThe plumber is here and the pipe that’s leaking is a big one — basically, it is the main pathway water takes when leaving our home. I’m going to guess that this is going to cost us a pretty penny. Ah, the joys of home ownership! To take my mind off of the coming bill, I’ve been window shopping for a bed to put in the upstairs guest room once we’ve actually renovated the upstairs. I’ve narrowed it down to three:

I’ve always loved daybeds, as impractical as they are for grownup people like myself. If I could get a giant version of this bed from Sachi Organics, I’d be happy.

Felt upholstery and thick seams make this bed (available at Design Public) feel more like a big comfy pillow…or so the theory goes. I like it because it’s blue.

This last one — from The Kids Window — pretty much speaks for itself.
Can you guess which one The Beard prefers?

I’m betting The Beard and I are in agreement.
Bummer about the plumbing, NtB. Since Mr. Twistie’s car went into the shop yesterday, I’ve been doing some internet window shopping, too. Sometimes you just have to pretend that money is still going to be in the bank. I’ve been looking at pretty gas stoves and more attractive entertainment centers.
Oh, and I have to say the one thing I don’t love about the blue bed is how low it is. It could be difficult for people with less than perfect knees. Yes, bad knees run in the family. How did you know? The blue however, is lickable in the extreme.

Mount the blue bed on a black, smaller platform so it still looks like it’s floating.
I’m sensing a nautical leaning here. First we have the yellow submarine kitchen and now the pirate bedroom. I wonder where it will go from here?

Twistie: I never did think of the knee factor. My knees aren’t exactly all that. I also wonder if people would feel weird sleeping so close to the floor…reminds me of dorm living.
Jennie: Twistie is the lady of the yellow sub kitchen, not I. The Beard just wants to be a pirate
That ship house is pretty badass, though. Any idea where it is?

No, I just Googled “Ship Houses” and this one came up under a blog of the 10 weirdest houses. There was also an island where the residents used old boats for houses.

OMG. I was going to vote for the daybed (that’s a daybed?? It’s lovely!), but of course I have to vote for number three. Three, three, three’s for me, a sailing bed and an evening sea!
*sigh* I feel you and the current pipe dreams. I had a pipe go, and it broke JUST where I had to pay for it, and not the city. I had to borrow against my salary to fix it, and it took three years to pay it off. I can speak from experience, here: having lived at various times without heat, without electricity, and without water, water is, hands down, THE worst to live without.
I’m still pretty fond of another guest bedroom candidate; I found a beautiful, Oriental-style cabinet. The cabinet opened up and unfolded into a bed, sort of an East-Meets-Murphy Bed. It was lovely, but I do see the appeal in a daybed, as well. I don’t think they’re particularly impractical, either; as an asthmatic, I spend a LOT of time sleeping braced upright on the couch, and it’s actually more comforable in many ways than sleeping flat. Of course, it also entails sleeping alone (or with a limited number of cats), unless you have a very wide couch. Or a daybed.

That cabinet sounds gorgeous, La BellaDonna. I’d like a limited number of cats. As it stands, in the wintertime, The Beard and I are both forced to sleep in “S” shapes because cats find their ways into the curves behind our knees and the bends at our waists. Closing the door leads to wakeful nights of scratching sounds and replacement doors.
