(Not So) Fleeting Elegance

By Christa Terry

At my wedding reception, the caterer brought along something they called “upscale disposable silverware.” Prior to the reception, we were all pretty interested to see what that would turn out to be. As it turns out, upscale disposable silverware is silver plastic cutlery designed to look more like an actual silverware set than the white plastic forks, spoons, and knives one can buy in the garbage bag aisle of the local Winn-Dixie. Okay, then.

Designers Donata Paruccini and Fabio Bortolani took the concept a step further with their deluxe plastic cutlery sets (manufactured by Pandora Design).

The set is decorated with a floral motif typical of 19th century Italian silverware and is dishwasher safe. Why would you re-use plastic cutlery for reasons other than ecological friendliness? Maybe because a sixteen piece set costs a whopping $120. The plastic glasses also come from Pandora Design, and a set of six costs $140.

Yikes?

Yikes, that’s very expensive for plastic. What’s the point?

  2. Twistie Says:

If you’d said $20.00 and $40.00, maybe, but $120.00 and $140.00? Ye gods and little purple fishes! At that price you can get good quality stainless and glassware. Hell, you can get them cheaper than that!

These are cute, but insanely overpriced.

  3. Never teh Bride Says:

Little Red: Beats me! My guess is that it’s something for people who have more money than they know what to do with?

Twistie: I know it! You can even go on eBay and get some sweet antique sets for less than those prices. Sometimes novelty is waaaaay overpriced.

  4. La BellaDonna Says:

Yikes! I spent $99 for my GOOD china service for 12! It’s white with a teeny tiny gray floral, machine washable and microwavable. Go take a peek at Ross-Simons.com – they offer everything in the way of tableware, all sorts of everyday china up through sterling silver, at some pretty awesome prices. This stuff is very pretty to look at – and pretty pricey, too.

Wondering if I might use my demitasse cups for decorating …
