Blame It On the Rain

I think of umbrella stands as something that hides unobtrusively in a corner by the back door until the weather requires it to perform its duty, but as it happens, there are plenty of umbrella stands that stand out.

The owl umbrella stand is fairly high-end (for an umbrella stand) at $100, but it has plenty of space for your whole family’s wet weather gear, while the stainless steel Squaro umbrella stand by Blomus provides a a tidy and efficient storage area for bumbershoots. Finally, the white plum blossoms umbrella stand that function can be beautiful.

I always thought umbrella stands were used by people MUCH fancier than I am. But after our wedding, we had a huge 99-cent glass vase from Ikea that needed a use, and it turned out to be just big enough for a couple of umbrellas…. And it’s a whole new world — looks great, and I can’t tell you how many times having an umbrella at the door has saved us from venturing unprotected out into the rain!

I had an aunt who had an umbrella stand made out of an elephants foot. A REAL elephants foot she told us. It’s gone now, sO I don’t know, but it sure looked real. Creeped me out big time.

Tara: What a great Ikea repurpose! Currently, we just lean our wet umbrellas against the wall of our mud room, but it’s taking a toll on the wall. Oops!

MT: Whoa… I’ve seen chairs made of elephant feet, but never an umbrella stand.
