Dangerous Curves Ahead (Among Other Things)
By Christa TerryVancouver furniture designer Judson Beaumont knows how to have a good time. While his company, Straight Line Designs, sounds like it would produce nothing but conservative pieces for conservative people, the furniture that comes from Straight Line Designs is actually anything but straight-laced.
In fact, whimsical is the best way to describe Beaumont’s pieces.
Visiting the company’s web site page is worth it for a glance at the gallery, which is full of images of “tear away” cabinets, curvy credenzas, and some seriously amazing furniture for kids that no doubt costs a pretty penny but is likely worth every one. You can commission custom furniture if that fits into your budget, and Beaumont is happy to work with international customers.

I’ve seen his stuff so often, in so many places around town, it doesn’t even look odd to me anymore. If I recall correctly, he once said he got the idea from a student film Tim Burton made with John Lasseter, I think it was called Nightmare? A little boy turned the lights out and went to bed and all the furniture looked horribly menacing in the darkness, but when he turned the lights on it all looked normal. This man’s furniture looks like the darkness version of the little boy’s room.
Now I’m off to YouTube to see if I can find that thing…

I want the “Bad Table”. It would make me smile every time I looked at it!

raincoaster: Well that sure gives these dressers and things a rather sinister feeling. And here I was thinking they were so whimsical!
La Petite Acadienne and Carol: I would happily put both of those pieces in my home, though I do think the clock would kind of freak me out at night when I got up to use the bathroom.
