Once You Go Black…

By Christa Terry

…you may find that your love of contemporary decor has only increased and you end up redoing your entire house just to accommodate a few elegant pieces. Or so I’ve heard.

My only first hand experiences with black furniture have involved paint and lacquer, and that was in high school when I was going through a decidedly Gothic phase. However, I’m not closed off to the notion of one day retooling my living room, bedroom, etc. to be ultramod with a traditional bent.

From Sheer Home, I like the black Louis chair upholstered in a rich fabric and the three-drawer “Angela” chest in a French black painted polished solid wood. What do you think?

I think black looks best alone when on simple shapes; I don’t think it flatters the carving on the chest. When you add some kind of highlighting to black, like colors or gilding, then black can flatter the ornate designs on more baroque furniture.

I have a vaguely Art Deco desk that has very simple lines, mainly the curves of the end shelves, and it looks great painted black.

    DO NOT WANT!

Black furniture , not modern , almost always looks like it belongs in the Haunted House ride at Disney.

  3. Never teh Bride Says:

I’ll admit, Kai Jones, that the chest of drawers does look rather like a kettle boiler now that I think about it. But to me, that’s part of the charm.

    Your desk sounds lovely!
