		<description>I think black looks best alone when on simple shapes; I don&#039;t think it flatters the carving on the chest.  When you add some kind of highlighting to black, like colors or gilding, then black can flatter the ornate designs on more baroque furniture.  

I have a vaguely Art Deco desk that has very simple lines, mainly the curves of the end shelves, and it looks great painted black.</description>
