And I totally used the "it's made by poor people!" motif when I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Chile trying to improve sales of the handmade rugs and blankets at our store. Handmade BY ILLITERATE INDIGENOUS MARGINALIZED WOMEN. WHO WERE BEATEN BY THEIR HUSBANDS. AND WHO DIDN'T HAVE INDOOR PLUMBING. (See? I'm good at this.) I had figured out that my market was Guilty First World Tourists and I was all about taking their money. PS I always wondered where the extra trees were going when I was with IP. Kinda like for every stalk of corn we cut down, we plant another. :) 2. "handcrafted in an Indonesian farming village." And I'm sure that most of that $250 is going to the Indonesian farming handcrafter.
