Nursery Bedding: It Costs How Much Now?
By Christa TerryGoing overboard when you’re decorating a nursery is so easy. You naturally want what’s best for baby, and there’s a societal expectation that says that what is expensive is usually the best. While smart people like you and me know that’s true in the logical part of our brains, there’s also the part of the brain that slyly suggests that budgets don’t matter when it comes to buying for baby.
I’m thinking about this specifically because The Beard and I recently went crib shopping at a store that carries higher end baby gear in addition to more moderately priced offerings. We dropped a wad on a convertible crib because our own crib might have been part of that giant Storkcraft crib recall, but we were still shocked by some of the prices on things like strollers and crib sets and nursery decorations. With that in mind, I was wondering how much you think these nursery sets cost.
Here’s a hint: The price I’m looking for is for the four-piece set that includes a quilt (which according to baby safety experts you can’t even use), a crib sheet, a crib bumper, and a dust ruffle. What’s not included is the diaper holder, the mobile, the wall art, the lamps, and all the other accessories. So just the nursery bedding.
Give me your guesses in the comments and, after a bit, I’ll share the answer. You could cheat by clicking on the pics to see compatible nursery bedding sets, but I want to know what you think is a reasonable price for a crib set off the top of your head. If you’re wondering how much I think one should spend on nursery bedding, the best answer would probably be “Not all that much.” It’s not something you’re going to be using for a very long time, so why go overboard?

I’m guessing in the $700-$800 range. Nursery bedding, especially the higher end stuff like Glenna Jean, is insanely priced. And like you said, half of that stuff you can’t even use, as pediatricians advise against comforters AND bumper pads.
Our crib was part of the recall as well. They’re sending us clips to “fix” it, but I don’t feel good putting Sam in there anymore, so we ordered a new crib from Ikea (and I checked Consumer Reports first — it’s one of their recommended ones.)

Good idea on replacing it, La Petite Acadienne. The department of consumer safety (or whatever the agency is called) released something that basically said that the hardware fix was crap and that the cribs were still unsafe.

In the UK, baby nursery bedding sets which usually comprise of a top sheet and a fitted bottom sheet, bumper and lightweight comforter (only 4 pieces) usually retails for somewhere about (GBP)70.00 for a good quality set. I do know that there are some problems sending them to the USA because of importation taxes, but if you have got plenty of time before your baby is due to be born, why not have a look at the U.K. site, you might get a bargin.
Congratulations and best wishes for the birth of your baby

I’d agree that these bedding sets are over $500. I’m not sure I’d put them quite as high as LPA’s guess but it’s entirely possible. I can’t believe how expensive some of this stuff is!

I was floored when I saw how much nursery sets were selling for in stores, but I found great bargains online. it’s not high end stuff, though. For real, how long are they going to be using the sets for anyway, and so much of it is stuff that you can’t even use because of thedanger of SIDS! They’re obviously playing on the new parent desire to get the best everything even if it’s going to be outgrown or whatever in a month or two.
