Too Many Pictures?

By Christa Terry

I am not ashamed to say that I have a lot of stuff on my walls, but even I felt a little crazy looking at this picture. Maybe it wouldn’t drive me batty, but it would definitely be the most distracting part of my whole house. Why, I wonder, would someone want people to pause there? It seems like it would be uncomfortable – here, stop and look around in this narrow, confined space. But maybe I’m alone in feeling this way. To find out, I created a little poll. Please cast your vote, and then explain yourself in the comments if you feel pressed to say more!

Hallways are my favorite place to pile on the photos. Personally, I feel like that way they’re LESS in-your-face, then if they were hung in the, say, living room.

It gives people something to look at on the way to the bathroom.

TOO BUSY. Too busy by far. Besides the fact that I’d be constantly knocking pictures off the wall when I walked past in a drunken haze, there’s just too much to look at to take in. I mean really take in. It’s almost like a waste of nice photos or pictures.

  3. Rubiatonta Says:

I usually hang art in groupings, but I like some whitespace, too. Frankly, that hallway arrangement made me feel a little stabby.

  4. marvel Says:

I once visited the home of a family 3 years after they had lost their 19-year old daughter in a horrible accident. All available wall space in the hallway was covered with photographs of the poor girl (as above). It was part of their grieving process.

  5. Christa Terry Says:

@marvel I don’t know what to say – I keep putting myself in their shoes and imagining myself standing in that hallway, drinking up images of my daughter for ever and ever.
