Choices, Choices, Numbered Staircases or Patterned Risers?

By Christa Terry

Our current plan, now that we actually live upstairs and thus travel up our staircase multiple times each day, is to grab some sticky house numbers and turn our regular stairs into fun numbered stairs. Because not only do the numbers make the stairs a bit more interesting, as someone mentioned back when I posted about numbered stairs, they also give kids a chance to count along. That was the plan. But now I’m not so sure because I just came across this:

Probably more work than it's worth, but still...

You can see my conundrum! Or not – is it too much? Would you ever consider it?

this straddles the line between cool and grandma’s wallpaper. I’m torn.

  2. Julie M. Says:

I think this is AMAZING!!! I currently live in an apartment, but if I ever have a two story home, I want to do this!! I’m not sure I’d do yellow or not… but none the less, it’s great!

  3. The Jananator Says:

I can’t say I care much for the wallpaper or whatever it is that’s there, but it could be really cool with a different set of patterns. If I were you I’d probably go with the numbers, though. Easier to remove if you hate them.

  4. Steph Says:

Hmm….that’s pretty cool, and yet probably too much work if you end up hating it in a couple of years. We’re going to be painting our stairs this summer too, and I still haven’t decided if I want to do a carpet runner, or paint on a runner, or just paint them altogether…too many options!

  5. Linda Mercury Says:

I *love* it! What a great way to brighten up the usually onerous chore of climbing stairs.

  6. lazydaisydays Says:

Not a fan. Maybe it’s because I’ve recently started looking a homes in a rural area with a lot of older houses, and it looks like a crazed wallpaper catalog threw up all over Every. Single. House. In the worst possible way, in every possible room. Gah. So this reminds me of that…

But I do love the idea of cute numbers or letters, though, or perhaps painting the risers in fun colors.

  7. ZaftigWendy Says:

I love the idea, though not that color. I think if it were me, knowing my penchant for all things colorful, I’d paint the risers in rainbow shades. Of course, now I wish I had stairs so I could do that.

  8. Kikishua Says:

    I love it. I feel like I shouldn’t – but I absolutely do!
