Come Into the Light?

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008
By Never teh Bride

Um, no thanks. I think I’ll stand way back from this creepy hanging noose lamp designed by Marie Thurnauer. While Halloween is just a few short weeks away, this morbid piece of decor is meant to hang in one’s lair 365 days a year.

Noose lamp!

That’s not the only reason I’ll be standing back, however. At 4750.00 €, this lamp is downright scary.

Trompe L’œil Headboards

All you need to make your own fabulous headboard is a little paint…and a little talent with a paintbrush and a steady hand, I suppose.

Simple headboard

Domino says “Linens from the other side of the color wheel amp up the whimsy” in this unique bedroom. I like how subtle the pattern is because it’s just a few shades off from the color of the larger wall. If it was white, this painted headboard might me less elegant.

White On White

By Never teh Bride

I’m seeing a lot more white-on-white with white interiors these days and a lot more shops full of furniture to help people achieve this striking look. Brocade Home, a division of Restoration Hardware, is one such retailer.

White accessories

I like, I like, but it would never, ever work for me, what with five variously colored cats, a husband who makes not infrequent oopsies, and a baby on the way. I clean enough as it is — I don’t feel like dooming myself to a life of endless dust rags and mops. I will, however, happily come over to your white-on-white house and bask in the starkness.

A Kitchen In Pieces

By Never teh Bride

Fantasizing about the perfect kitchen is a hobby of mine. Mine is small, so inevitably I picture something very open, very airy, and rustic without being too Little House On the Prairie. I do not live on a working farm or in a French chalet, and I don’t want to cop those looks in their entirety. In much the same way a fireplace would look out of place in my living room, a huge scarred table or a deep copper sink would look pretty ridiculous in my kitchen. C’est la vie!

So what do I do? I look for bits and pieces of homey goodness I can incorporate into my decor until that day comes I can afford to have contractors gut and rebuild my cozy little cottage.

Peroba Hanging Wall Shelves ($25 surcharge)

Small spaces with even smaller amounts of storage are not a problem when you use shelving creatively. These reclaimed peroba wall shelves don’t take up too much room, but they clear some countertop real estate.

Spotlight on Molla Space

By Never teh Bride

Molla Space, a Los Angeles based design collective, may be my new favorite shop. Their mission is varied — they want to advance the art of living, provide a platform for designers from all over the globe, aaaaaaand they’re dedicated to finding artful lifestyle implements that embody both form and function.

I’ll call the prices reasonable — the rhino, for instance, costs $40 with a portion of the proceeds is donated to the Japan Committee for IUCN, while a set of three By The Lake cups and saucers costs $18. That’s a downright steal for beautiful and well-designed products for the home.

The Ice Man Cometh

As if those sappy, hotel room wall worthy Thomas Kinkade paintings weren’t enough, we can no see first hand what happens when a giant ice man comes and devours an entire Kinkade village.

Oh, the horror! The horror!

Inspiration From Graham & Brown

The one person I know who was absolutely stoked to hang wallpaper eventually discovered that hanging wallpaper frequently requires stripping wallpaper. Further exploration revealed that stripping ancient wallpaper off of plaster is a huge pain is simply not worth the time invested. I’m pretty sure she eventually gave up and bought a new house rather than have to deal with half-stripped walls.

I don’t think I personally have the energy for wallpaper, but that doesn’t mean I can’t admire it and post about it and encourage you to do what I cannot! Below you’ll find five wallpapers from Graham & Brown that will hopefully delight and inspire.

Heavy on the chocolate and light on the orange, Matchsticks looks nothing like its namesake. ($49.99 for 11 yards)

Furniture With Wings

By Never teh Bride

I have a love-hate relationship with aviation. I’m petrified of flying, though I’ve been doing it regularly since I was a baby and continue to do so because of familial responsibilities. I’ve piloted a small aircraft — an experience I found at once terrifying and exhilarating. And I’m fascinated by the physics of flight, even if the thought of speeding along 30,000 feet above the ground seems a tad, oh, I don’t know, reckless?

Maybe it’s just the feelings of delightful terror talking, but I think I’d like to own my own piece of aviation history, a la MotoArt’s somewhat intense creations.

albatross couch

The Albatross tank couch is by far my favorite piece. What is that thing? Apparently, it’s a pontoon with more rivets than you can shake a stick at. Like all MotoArt’s creations, you have to request the price, which means it’s automatically waaaaay out of my price range. *sniff*

Stacked Storage

By Never teh Bride

If the detritus of living can’t be hidden away in a drawer or cabinet, the next best thing is to hide it away in some attractive vessel. I, for example, have fabrics and sewing accessories strewn about my office in a most irritating fashion — I have a basket for my threads and a basket for my cloth, but somehow everything from shears to patterns find their way onto the floor. For you, it may be papers, books, art supplies, or crafting gear, but stuff needs to get out of the way.

nesting boxesstacking boxes

For odds and ends storage, I like stacking nesting boxes in cute patterns because you can slide them into empty corners, but they don’t take up a whole lot of space. These particular boxes come from the unfortunately named Dot Com Gift Shop, which has all manner of sweet little things for the home. If, however, you would rather make your own boxes, there is no shortage of instructional books out there, like Gift Box Studio and Creating Books & Boxes.

Nature Under Glass

Thursday, September 18th, 2008
By Never teh Bride

I’m not one for keeping plants or animals cooped up, but I’ve always adored very, very old framed nature studies. Even butterflies pinned under glass can capture my fancy if I’m sure that the poor little things would have been long since deceased.

John Derian

The John Derian for Target collection is a compromise between the new and the old. Besides vaguely vintage looking vases, trays, photo frames, and shadowboxes, there are gorgeous framed prints that are evocative of the antique botanical collections I love so much. The best part? Each one is a mere $25!

Edit: That was supposed to be three different prints, of course. I don’t know how I ended up with two poppies…
