A rainbow in the kitchen

By Christa Terry

As I mentioned previously, I like my kitchens and my bathrooms to be white on white with white. However, there is a caveat. As much as I prefer a nice sanitized look where walls and floors and cabinets are concerned, I know that bringing in a splash of vivid color really makes a space pop from a looks point of view.

RED!ORANGE!YELLOW!
GREEN!BLUE!PURPLE!

Does your kitchen need some brightening up? If so, you could do worse than to incorporate any of the yummy, pretty things pictured above into your food prep area decor.

(stay tuned for a rainbow in the bedroom *wink*)

I like white kitchens with colorful accessories, too…I have a large set of my great-aunt’s original Fiestaware from the 1930’s that I use as decoration. However, I must admit that I hyperventilate at the thought of a $300 toaster. Does it do something else besides make toast??

It’s kind of ridiculous how much time I spend worrying about what colour kitchenaid to get. I mean, I know I’m going to buy myself one, because I bake too much to save it for a hypothetical future wedding registry. But if I buy a bright color will I regret it? Will I get tired of it? What if I get a neutral like black but then decide I want a pale kitchen? If I get white, will I be turning into my mother? Why don’t they come in gold? Is “almond” actually just beige?

These are the questions which keep me up at night.

Yowza, Judy! I don’t know that I’d have posted that toaster if I’d noted the price. For $300, that toaster better get up a half an hour before I do, start the coffee brewing, and then fix me a hearty breakfast!

  4. Tizzy Says:

Carrie I’m right there with you. I’m registering for one but which color? My current kitchen is white and red with light blue accents (it’s not patriotic, I swear). Should I get red? Will I get sick of it? What about the colbalt? Is the stainless steel too indutrial? Is the white too boring? What if I stick with the red ktichen will I regret getting the white?

Also, is it bad that I recognized 4 of those items and knew their costs off the top of my head?

My sister always says if she thinks some thing is overpriced: “For that it better walk the dog and tie my shoes.” She doesn’t have dog but I think that just makes it more amusing.

My kitchen is on the north side of the house. And when we first moved in, it had dark brown cabinets, dark brown paneling on the walls and a dark brown kitchen carpet. Between the lack of natural light and the color scheme, it was like cooking in a coffin (we won’t discuss the fact that because there was no insulation in the walls, if felt like the grave as well). So, I painted everything shiny white and ripped up the carpeting to find an old red, white and yellow linoleum tile floor. Brighter, yes, but still…cold as the grave. Instead of a coffin, I felt like I was cooking in a surgical theatre. We recently redid the entire kitchen – right down to the studs. The new windows and insulation definitely warm up the place, and I just gave up in terms of natural light – and brought in major LED action for the place. I gave up on the white color scheme and did everything in light colored woods, almond walls and terra cotta tile. Gives the place a nice rosy glow.

I also love white kitchens with pops of color. I live in a rental right now, but I have lots of colorful items: a tangerine Kitchenaid stand mixer, a cobalt Kitchenaid food processor, a set of chartreuse, turquoise, and mango Fiestaware (mixed vintage and modern), a collection of colorful Pyrex (mostly from the 50s), a baby blue breadbox, colorful canisters, a collection of 40s and 50s lemonade pitchers with many painted designs, and lately I’ve been lusting after Le Creuset’s new Caribbean blue cookware. I’m not sure what my kitchen will look like when we buy a house, but I’m partial to orange, yellow, and aqua. 😉

And I recognized everything in that photo except the dishes. I wouldn’t mind a Dualit toaster, they really work well. I like the yellow one.
